Know it before the inspector does

Two things decide how your day goes at the scale house: how ready your truck is, and how well you understand the score that follows your company.

Roadside Inspection Checklist — teaser

  • Lights, reflectors, and markers — every one working, every time.
  • Tires and brakes checked before you roll, not after you're stopped.
  • ELD logs current, and your CDL, medical card, and registration in the cab.
  • Load securement you would bet your score on — because it is.

How CSA scores work — the short version

  • CSA (Compliance, Safety, Accountability) is FMCSA's program that scores carriers using roadside inspection and crash data from the last 24 months.
  • Scores are percentiles from 0 to 100 in seven BASIC categories — Unsafe Driving, Crash Indicator, Hours-of-Service, Vehicle Maintenance, Controlled Substances, Hazardous Materials, and Driver Fitness.
  • Higher is worse: high percentiles bring warning letters, audits, and lost loads.
  • Every inspection you pass — or fail — moves your company's numbers, and carriers check your record when they hire.
